Good news ladies, while things aren’t completely terrible for us right now, our greatest adversaries are working hard to set us back in ways we’ve never seen before. The Women's Movement of the 1960s was a pivotal moment in American history, marking the second wave of feminism that fought for equal pay, reproductive rights, and the end of gender discrimination. This movement laid the groundwork for our ongoing fight for equality.
Despite the progress we've made, we still face significant challenges. Now, add factors like class, financial status, race, and a complicit mindset among some women, and the battle becomes even more complex. While the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) opened many doors, it remained an uphill battle for decades. Yet, we persevered.
However, the question remains: have we truly come that far since then? Today, women must work twice as hard for half the recognition. For a brief moment, it seemed we were making strides toward success and validation, but the goalposts kept moving further for women and closer for men. Our unity posed a threat, leading to tactics aimed at setting us back.
These tactics are not only external but also internal. Women-on-women social unity crimes are a significant issue. The way we sometimes treat each other can be criminal, not by law, but in the way it undermines our unity. This behavior starts early and continues into adulthood, impacting our personal and professional lives.
From childhood experiences to professional settings, the impact of internalized misogyny is profound. Growing up, I faced bullying from other girls, which conditioned me to feel insecure and unworthy. In my professional life, female colleagues and mentors often demeaned me, leading to psychological immobility and fear.
We must ask ourselves: how do we break this cycle of internalized misogyny that passes from generation to generation? How do we change the narrative to celebrate and uplift each other instead of tearing each other down?
Our rights as women are under scrutiny, and every right we have fought for is imperative to our survival and well-being. We must confront these challenges with courage and build a future where fairness and respect are the norms.
The frenemy within our ranks is a significant obstacle. This frenemy can build and destroy, celebrating our demise. It’s essential to recognize that this frenemy includes those closest to us—our fathers, brothers, husbands, and even ourselves when we internalize harmful beliefs about gender roles.
As women, we need to challenge these outdated and harmful beliefs. We must stand together, support each other, and fight for the respect and equality we deserve. The journey towards equality is far from over, but it is a journey worth taking.
Take inspiration from the women who came before us and be a beacon of hope and strength for those who will follow. Together, we can create a future where fairness and respect are not just aspirations but realities.
